Carolina Explorers offers environmental education opportunities to families interested in learning more about North Carolina nature. Our efforts include publications/multimedia, as well as hands-on programs for young learners in Banner Elk, NC.
This Season’s Featured Nature Topics
‘Adventures in Nature’ 2024 Dates
We offer seasonal “Adventures in Nature” classes on select Saturdays for kids at the Banner Elk Book Exchange, located at the Historic Banner Elk School in beautiful downtown Banner Elk, North Carolina. Kids ages 8-12 are invited to come explore the flora, fauna and fungi of this special state. Visit the “Adventures in Nature” page for current classes.
Families who participate in the hands-on “Adventures in Nature” program and families who visit the Banner Elk Book Exchange in Banner Elk will receive free materials.
The 2023 season was a HUGE success, thanks to all the awesome participants and their families!!

Coming Soon – Carolina Explorers Mountain Edition Volume 1
Each short volume of Carolina Explorers includes a variety of topics, organized by “categories in nature.” Volume 1 highlights Appalachian brook trout, Eastern bluebirds, woolly worms, turkey tail mushrooms, Christmas ferns, mica, frost columns and many other topics. This publication serves as a fun read and field guide, and includes a variety of games and activities that are fun for the entire family! Soon, you’ll be able to pick up your FREE printed copy at the Banner Elk Book Exchange at the Historic Banner Elk School in downtown Banner Elk, NC. (Stay tuned!)

EcoEXPLORE is an initiative of The N.C. Arboretum in which families can help scientists AND earn badges and prizes. EcoEXPLORE Hotspots are special areas for ecoEXPLORERS to make observations of plants and animals. These are great places to make your first “share” or observation. There are several Hot Spots throughout the N.C. High Country. Find one near you!
